Fine lines and wrinkles: understanding what can be addressed.

Fine lines and wrinkles are among the most common concerns patients bring to Dr Winter. Not all of them are suitable for treatment, and the consultation exists to establish what is realistic, what is not, and what options are available. That conversation starts with understanding what is actually causing the lines you are concerned about.

About this concern

What causes fine lines and wrinkles to develop.

From the mid-thirties, collagen and elastin production declines gradually. These structural proteins give skin its firmness and resilience. As they reduce, lines that were once visible only during expression begin to remain at rest.

Many fine lines are expression lines, formed by repeated muscle contraction. Forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet each reflect specific underlying muscle behaviour. Their cause differs from lines produced by volume loss, and the appropriate response differs accordingly.

Volume loss creates a third category. As facial fat reduces with age, previously supported skin becomes less taut. Sun exposure accelerates these changes. The consultation exists to determine which combination of factors applies, because treating the wrong cause produces no meaningful result.

Not every line is suitable for treatment. The consultation exists to establish what is realistic, what is not, and why the distinction matters for your specific concern.

Treatment options

What may be discussed during consultation.

Treatment options are only discussed following a proper assessment of your skin, the nature of your concern, and your medical history. Not every patient is a suitable candidate for every treatment, and Dr Winter will not recommend a treatment that is unlikely to produce a meaningful result for your specific presentation. The following treatments may be considered where assessment indicates they are appropriate.

Anti-wrinkle treatment

Botulinum toxin injections may be suitable for expression lines caused by muscle movement: forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. The treatment temporarily reduces targeted muscle activity, softening the overlying crease. Dr Winter will assess whether your specific concern is likely to respond and discuss realistic outcomes before any treatment is agreed.

About anti-wrinkle treatment

Dermal fillers

Dermal filler may be discussed for deeper folds or areas where volume loss has contributed to the appearance of lines. Hyaluronic acid fillers can restore support beneath the skin surface. The consultation will assess whether filler is the appropriate approach and what a conservative, natural-looking outcome would realistically involve.

About dermal fillers

The consultation

Why assessment comes before any recommendation.

Fine lines may look similar on the surface, but their underlying causes differ significantly. A line caused by muscle movement requires a different approach to one caused by volume loss. Treating the wrong cause with the wrong treatment does not produce a good result. Dr Winter’s assessment identifies the most likely cause before any treatment discussion begins.

During the consultation, Dr Winter examines the areas of concern, observes muscle movement, assesses skin quality, and reviews your medical history. Some patients are found to be good candidates for treatment. Others are not, or the timing is not right. In either case, you leave with an honest clinical view of your options rather than a sales agenda.

Questions

About fine lines and wrinkle treatment.

Are all fine lines treatable?

Not all fine lines respond to the same treatment, and not all are suitable for treatment at all. Lines caused by muscle movement may be suitable for anti-wrinkle treatment. Lines caused by volume loss may respond to filler. Some reflect skin quality changes better addressed differently, or are best left alone. The consultation will clarify which category applies to your concern and what the realistic options are.

How long do results last?

Results vary significantly by treatment type, anatomy, and individual response. Anti-wrinkle treatment typically softens over three to six months. Dermal filler results vary by area, product, and how the individual metabolises the material. Dr Winter will explain realistic timelines during consultation rather than quoting a fixed duration that may not reflect your specific situation.

Does age affect treatment suitability?

Age is one factor among several. Skin quality, skin thickness, medical history, the nature of the concern, and the patient’s own expectations all contribute to whether treatment is appropriate. Dr Winter sees patients across a wide age range and assesses each case on its individual merits.

Can I combine treatments?

In some cases, different treatments work well alongside each other. Anti-wrinkle treatment and dermal filler address different underlying causes and can sometimes be used together. Whether a combined approach is appropriate is a clinical decision discussed during consultation, based on your anatomy and what you are hoping to achieve.
